MARYVILLE – An early doubles point was not enough to carry Maryville past a determined Belhaven squad in a 4-3 Collegiate Conference of the South defeat here Sunday afternoon. It was the final home match of the 2024-25 season.
The Scots won two of the three doubles matches to get the point.
Jackson Meyer and
Field Myatt rolled a 6-2 victory at No. 2, while
Eli Cauthorn and
Jonathan Crane prevailed 6-3 at No. 3 to hand the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Maryville then won the first sets of the 1, 2 and 3 singles matches in decisive fashion, giving those in attendance hopes for a quick Scots victory. But credit to Belhaven for rallying to victories at No. 1 and 2 to take a 2-1 lead and shift the momentum.
Luka Romano won his match at No. 3 by a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 score to tie the match 2-2. But
Ian Martin's win at No. 6 was the lone victory for Maryville over the final three matches. Martin rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) victory.
'Tough One Today'
"That was a tough one today," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "College tennis is a marathon, not a sprint. There are plenty of momentum shifts that take place in a competitive match. We had a lot of momentum after doubles and the top three singles' first sets. Improvement can be made from the standpoint of staying in the moment.
"We have a great deal we can take away from this match in many areas. Thankfully, we will get another opportunity against these guys in the conference tournament, and we will be more ready for the marathon."
Maryville drops to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the CCS, while Belhaven is 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the league. There is a good chance these two teams could meet again in the CCS Tournament First Round on April 24 in Chattanooga.
The Scots are on the road this week to conclude the regular season. Maryville visits Asbury on Tuesday for the final CCS matchup, and then MC travels to Earlham in Indiana for a Friday nonconference match.
