Scots Split Doubleheader, CCS Tourney Next

Maryville Split the Doubleheader with Piedmont Sunday to Earn 30th Season Victory

DEMOREST, Ga.- The Scots close out the regular season with a doubleheader split with Piedmont, falling in game one 6-2 and prevailing in the nightcap 7-6.

Maryville has now won 30 games this season, tied for the most in school history with last year's squad. The Scots have a great chance to break the record with the conference tournament coming up, beginning Wednesday.

The Scots threw nine total pitchers on the day, with Austin Suttle earning the victory in game two and Xavier Resto getting his second save of the year.

Game One

Maryville took the lead first in the second on a Matt Hall sacrifice fly that scored Jacob Johnston from third. Johnston would score again in the fourth on a Brayden Evans groundout to second, which would be the only two scores for the Scots in the game, ultimately falling 6-2.

Starting pitcher Kaden Wimsatt had a solid outing, throwing 5 innings and allowing just one earned run.

Game Two

The Scots found themselves down in an early 3-0 deficit in the fourth inning before getting on the board.

Two straight doubles to begin the inning put MC in position to make a comeback. Colin Dunworth doubled to lead off the inning, followed by a Frank Derner double that allowed Dunworth to score the first run for the Scots. Hunter Thaxton grounded out, but advanced Derner to third in the process. AJ Finco got the third double of the inning for Maryville, bringing home Derner for the second score. Brayden Evans singled and scored Finco to tie the game at three apiece before being thrown out at second base to end the inning.

The Scots would add another run in the fourth to take the lead, thanks to a Frank Derner single that scored Matt Hall

Piedmont would retake the lead in the fifth on a two-RBI double of their own, but the Scots were quick to answer with another double, this time by Matt Hall that allowed Ashton Whiteaker to score and tie the game back up. Hall was a perfect 3-3 in the game with two runs scored and an RBI. Zach Devires would hit a sac fly to center field that brought home Brayden Evans, and Jacob Johnston would single and bring in Matt Hall. 7-5 Scots after six. A flyout, a single, and two groundouts would close the game in the seventh as Xavier Resto put the Lions to bed in the final regular season game of the year.

The Scots will take the next few days to prepare for hosting the CCS Tournament and will face the No. 6 seeded Covenant Scots on Wednesday, time TBD. Covenant and Maryville had two closely contested games earlier in the season, but MC came out on top and swept Covenant. The Covenant Scots are 5-13 in CCS play and 19-20 overall, most recently sweeping Asbury in their final conference series.
