MARYVILLE - The Fighting Scots baseball team are riding a seven game winning streak after taking down Sewanee Tuesday at Scotland Yard. Ironically, their last loss came on March 25, against Sewanee, where the final score was 5-2 Tigers. Today's final score? 5-2 Scots.
Both teams were stuck at 0 until the third inning, where both teams got their first runs across. Sewanee scored on a hard hit single that bounced off the glove of Reese Jordan at second base, scoring the runner from second.
Ashton Whiteaker blasted Maryville onto the scoreboard with a two-run home run that landed clear on Honaker Field over the left field wall, bringing in Jordan as well. 2-1 Scots after three.
The two teams added a combined four more runs in the fourth inning, which ended up being the last runs of the game for either team.
Sewanee scored on another single, this time to left field, bringing in the runner from second to tie the game up.
The Scots answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Maryville players were hit-by-pitch three times and walked once, along with getting on base with a single, a fielder's choice (that didn't result in an out), and two sac bunts.
Nick curry got the inning started by being hit by a pitch.
Zach Devries then executed a sac bunt, getting Curry to second.
Brayden Evans walked next, putting
Matt Hall, the raining CCS Player of the Week, up to bat. Hall smashed a single to left field, scoring Curry from second and advancing Evans to third and himself to second on the throw.
Reece Jordan reached base on a fielder's choice next, with the third baseman attempting to get Evans out at home but couldn't get off a good throw and allowed Evans to score and Hall to advance to third.
Colin Dunworth then advanced Jordan to second on another well-placed sac bunt to get two runners in scoring position.
Ashton Whiteaker was then walked, loading the bases.
Frank Derner was then hit by a pitch, bringing in Hall to get MC their final run of the inning and game with the score at 5-2 Scots.
Hunter Thaxton flew out to center field to end the inning.
Sewanee would get four more hits through the ninth inning, threatening to score and tie the game, but Maryville's group effort from the mound shut down those chances.
Mitchell Grannan came in to pitch the final inning, earning a save after there were three base runners in the inning and he secured the victory with a double play and then a ground out.
Johnny Ruggiero Jr. earned his first victory of the year after being the most effective pitcher in the game, pitching one inning, allowing one hit, and getting one strikeout and facing just three batters.
With the win, Maryville is now 22-8 after winning seven in a row. Next up they will host Covenant in a home conference series Friday and Saturday.
Covenant is 13-16 overall and 2-10 in the CCS, and just defeated Berry in extra innings 5-4 to end their seven-game losing streak.
