Eagles Down the Scots

Maryville to Play Loser of Marymout and Lynchburg Tomorrow

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Maryville Baseball fell to Emory University 7-1 in the opening game of the Lynchburg Regional, played at Liberty University.

The Scots could only manage one hit through the first six innings while giving up five runs on eight hits through that same period. Emory's starting pitcher Josh Zuckerman was untouchable, throwing seven innings with seven strikeouts, three hits, and just one earned run. In relief of Zuckerman, Bennet Speicher threw the eighth and ninth innings and gave up just three hits with no runs scored.

Zuckerman's fast ball had the Scots late on the swing throughout most of the game, with flyouts to right field being a common occurrence.

The Scots seemed to have some spark in the first inning, with Colin Dunworth reaching base on a walk after a Reece Jordan flyout, but Dunworth was picked off at first after taking a bit too big of a lead.

The seventh inning saw Maryville gain some energy. After a Frank Derner flyout, Jacob Johnston reached first on a single up the middle and then stole second, Zach Devries walked, and then both stole second and third for a double steal. Cody Meier was walked to load the bases with only one out. Brayden Evans brought home Johnston with a bloop single to the pitcher that was just out of reach. Maryville couldn't capitalize further in the inning, with Matt Hall grounding into a double play to end the inning. Emory would tack on two insurance runs in the seventh to make it a 7-1 game.

Cody Meier

Reece Jordan would double in the eighth, and Cody Meier would single in the ninth, but neither would advance from there. Overall, the Scots batted 5-31 while Emory hit 12-32.

Starting Pitcher Kyle Timko was credited with the loss after throwing four innings and allowing five earned runs in what was a rather solid outing that turned out unlucky. He was able to strike out five batters in his outing and walked just one. Three arms threw in relief of Timko, with Mitchell Grannan first out of the pin. Grannan threw two solid innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out three. Pete Pappas threw 0.1 innings and gave up two hits and two runs. Austin Suttle closed out the game for the Scots, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing just two hits, no walks, and getting one strikeout.

The Scots look to rebound tomorrow in the losers bracket game, currently scheduled for 10 AM against the Loser of Lynchburg and Marymount, which play tonight at 8 PM.
