SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Maryville volleyball earned an impressive win against the Brevard Tornadoes in just four sets. This win against Brevard pushed Maryville to 2-0 at the start of their season, and drops Brevard down to 0-4.
Maryville started the match fast and with intensity, with two services aces delivered by
Dakota Vaiese. After warming up, Brevard was able to fight back, beginning back-and-forth play until a service error ended the push back from Brevard. With featured kills from
Ruby Walton, and four service aces from
Kyrah Bowles, Maryville went on a 9-0 run before Brevard could answer back. Numerous service errors and attack errors extended the lead for the Scots, and a final kill by
Cailin Mastropasqua ended the first set, 25-12.
During set two, neither team was able to pull ahead until Brevard went on a 12-4 run, giving them an eight-point lead early on into the match. Despite efforts from
Kylie Wilhelmi, Vaiese, and Mastropasqua, the Scots were not able to piece anything together, losing the second set, 25-17.
Set three scoring was initiated by Maryville who went on a short run, which was quickly answered by a six-point run by Brevard. Brevard was able to keep Maryville on a short leash, forcing back-and-forth play once again, until the Scots went on a 4-0 run, creating a five-point deficit for Brevard. The teams continued to go back and forth, until a kill from Mastropasqua allowed the Scots to go on a 6-0 run, featuring kills from Wilhelmi, and two service aces from
Katelyn Eldred. In Maryville fashion, the Scots took the third set, 25-15.
Maryville kicked set four off with a kill from Wilhelmi, but the Scots had to quickly bounce back after a five-point run from Brevard early on. Both Maryville and the Tornadoes went on short scoring-runs, and Maryville fell behind, 22-19. Two kills from Wilhelmi and an attack error from Brevard tied the game up. The Tornadoes were able to add a point from a Maryville service error, but the Scots were able to capitalize on a service error and two attack errors, earning a fourth set win of 25-23.
This victory against the Brevard Tornadoes moves Maryville to 2-0-0 for the season. The Scots are back in action today at 5:00 PM CST, taking on the Berea College Blue Bears to wrap up their time at the Sewanee Invitational.
