SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Maryville Women's Volleyball finishes out their time at the Sewanee Invite, starting the season off strong with three wins.
Maryville started set one off strong, going on a 6-1 run early on. Berea responded with few points of their own, allowing Maryville to control the set early, 11-4. Piece by piece, the Blue Bears were able to hold Maryville back, eventually tying up with the Scots, 18-18. Maryville was eventually able to pull ahead, but Berea did not go down easily, earning the win against the Scots, 25-23.
Set two was a constant back-and-forth battle, with each team inching ahead of the other before falling back behind. A kill by
Kylie Wilhelmi allowed the Scots to pull ahead, 23-21. With a kill from
Ava George Wilber, and a final blow from
Cailin Mastropasqua, the Scots were able to win the second set, 25-23.
The Scots were able to start set three in a dominant fashion, going on a 4-0 run before Berea could respond. Maryville then followed with another run, 5-0. With contributions from
Ruby Walton, Wilhelmi, Wilber, and Mastropasqua, the Scots were able to wreak havoc, upping the score to 22-8. Two kills from
Audry Neil, and a kill from Walton ended the match in favor of the Scots, 25-10.
Maryville had to work from behind at the start of set four, with the Blue Bears going on a 5-1 run early on. The Scots and Berea were able to fight back-and-forth, until an attack error by Berea gave Maryville the advantage. One kill from Walton, two kills from Wilhelmi, and a service ace from
Maddie Bouvier edged the Scots over Berea, 17-14. Maryville was able to add to their lead by five until Berea interrupted their run with a kill. The Scots were able to wrap up the set with a kill from
Audry Neil, winning the game, 25-21
The Scots had a team hitting percentage of .350, led by Wilhelmi with 15 kills (.394), followed by Walton (.458) and Mastropasqua (.348) with 12.
Megan Fairburn locked down on defense with 13 digs and 40 assist.
The Scots are back in action on Friday, September 5
th at 3:00 PM for a rematch against the Meredith Avenging Angels.
