SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maryville (1-0-0, 0-0-0) opened its 2025 season in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, sweeping Meredith (1-1-0, 0-0-0) 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 at Juhan Gymnasium.
The opening set was tightly contested, featuring nine ties and three lead changes. Meredith jumped out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back service aces, but
Cailin Mastropasqua,
Ruby Walton, and
Kylie Wilhelmi quickly steadied the Scots with crucial kills. With the score tied at 23-23, Mastropasqua delivered a key kill, and Walton closed out the set 25-23.
Maryville took command in the second set, building an early lead behind Wilhelmi and
Maddie Bouvier, who combined for multiple service aces during a 6-0 run that stretched the margin to 11-6. Mastropasqua and Wilhelmi provided consistent offensive firepower, while the Scots' efficient .414 hitting helped them close the set, 25-17.
The third set saw Meredith push back, forcing ties at 14-14 and 19-19. The Scots responded with clutch kills from Mastropasqua and Wilhelmi, supported by strong net defense and timely points from Walton. Mastropasqua notched her 18
th kill of the match, and Walton's service ace sealed the sweep at 25-21.
Overall, Maryville hit .330 as a team, led by Mastropasqua's 18 kills (.467) and Wilhelmi's 14 (.429). Walton contributed eight kills, three aces, and two blocks, while setters
Megan Fairburn (19 assists) and
Dakota Vaiese (10 assists, 10 digs) orchestrated the balanced offense. Defensively, the Scots limited Meredith to a .146 hitting percentage and out-dug the Avenging Angels, 40-37.
