Women's Soccer Falls to JCU

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The aggressive attack of the fighting Scots never penetrated the stingy defense of John Carroll, falling Friday evening 0-1.

The lone goal of the game came in the 24th minute, scored by JCU's Emily Patrzyk and assisted by Meredith Coloian. JCU attempted 14 shots in the game, but only the winning goal was on target.

The Scots were once again aggressive on the offensive end, putting up 15 shots with four on goal and others just off the target, and even more being blocked at the last second. JCU's defense was smothering against the Scots' attack, not letting anything get through their line. Maryville attempted 11 corner kicks in the match, compared to only six for John Carroll.

Chloe Chase, Hannah Smoot, Avery Brown, and Anne Marie Konieczny all attempted multiple shots against JCU, with Chase and Smoot combining for eight and three on goal. Maya Baggett, Madison McDonald, and Sadie Phelan each attempted a shot as well.

It is hard not to mention the stellar defensive performance by the Scots, as the team did not allow any great looks to the JCU team, giving them just one shot on goal. The defense presses the opponent and forces them to turnover possession frequently, making it challenging for opposing teams to formulate any attack.

The match was a back-and-forth affair, with the crowd getting into the action. The student population at the game rallied behind the Scots, bringing life to the home crowd and giving the MC energy to keep attacking. This will prove to be a decisive factor in home matches going forward, as the Scots' home crowds are second-to-none.

Maryville is back in action tomorrow in the second day of the Maryville Fall Invite - This time against in-state   rival - and future CCS opponent - Rhodes. Rhodes defeated Covenant tonight 5-0.
