DECATUR, Ga. – The Maryville College women's basketball team put together a dominant second-half performance on Tuesday night, pulling away for a convincing 72–51 victory over Agnes Scott College inside Woodruff Activities Building.
The win moves the Scots to 10-7 overall and 6-3 in Collegiate Conference of the South play, while Agnes Scott falls to 2-16 on the season and 1-8 in conference action. Maryville has now won two straight and three of its last four contests as the team continues to build momentum in the heart of CCS play.
Junior forward Ella Haney led all scorers with 19 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting, adding seven rebounds, three blocks, and two assists to pace the Scots. Senior center Kadence Stoner followed with a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while junior guard Emily Wilson chipped in nine points, including three three-pointers, to help Maryville control the tempo throughout.
The opening half was a tightly contested affair, with Maryville building an early 7–0 lead behind a Wilson three-pointer and consecutive layups from Tharpe and Stoner. Agnes Scott battled back to cut the deficit to two points late in the first quarter, but the Scots maintained a slim 15–11 advantage after 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw both teams struggle offensively, with Maryville managing just 12 points while Agnes Scott trimmed the lead to one. The Scots took a narrow 27–26 edge into the locker room, setting the stage for a decisive second half.
Wilson buried a three-pointer on Maryville's opening possession of the third quarter, and the Scots never looked back. Haney scored 10 points in the period, including back-to-back three-point plays, while Braxton Fritz connected on a pair of three-pointers to help Maryville explode for 26 third-quarter points.
By the time the fourth quarter began, Maryville had stretched the lead to 19 points and cruised to the finish. The Scots' bench provided quality minutes down the stretch, with freshman Chloe Powell adding five points and junior Halle Kitchen contributing four points and four assists.
Maryville shot 43.5 percent from the field for the game and dominated the glass, outrebounding Agnes Scott 49–36. The Scots also forced 20 turnovers while committing just 18, and converted those miscues into 17 points. Maryville's defense held Agnes Scott to just 28.1 percent shooting from the floor and limited the Scotties to eight points in the decisive third quarter.
Haney was a force on both ends of the floor, blocking three shots and providing the interior presence that helped the Scots control the paint, outscoring Agnes Scott 30–22 inside.
The Scots return home on Saturday, Jan. 31st, to face LaGrange at Cooper Athletic Center at 2:00 PM in a crucial conference matchup.
