MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Women's Soccer delivered a statement win Sunday, knocking off No. 8 Trinity University, 1-0, at the MC Soccer Complex. Ruby Saylor provided the decisive goal in the 20th minute, while Paige Silva turned away all 14 shots on goal to help the Scots hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
Trinity entered the matchup unbeaten at 12-0-1, but Maryville (6-4-4) proved up to the challenge, combining timely finishing with a resilient defensive effort to secure its biggest win of the season so far.
Saylor Strikes
Trinity applied pressure early, generating several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Silva was ready, making key saves to keep the Tigers off the board and give the Scots an opportunity to find their footing.
Maryville capitalized in the 20th minute. Katie Corley and Regan Boyd worked together to set up Saylor, who finished the opportunity at the 19:09 mark to put the Scots ahead 1-0.
The goal gave Maryville the advantage it would carry into halftime, despite Trinity continuing to push forward. The Tigers finished the opening period with 17 shots, but Silva and the Scots' defense kept the visitors scoreless.
Silva Shuts the Door
Trinity continued to press after the break, looking for an equalizer throughout the second half. The Tigers added 11 shots in the final 45 minutes, but Maryville refused to surrender its lead.
Silva was outstanding between the posts, recording eight saves in the first half and six more after halftime. Her 14-save shutout anchored the Scots' defensive effort against a Trinity attack that finished with 28 total shots.
Maryville managed six shots of its own, putting three on target, but Saylor's first-half finish proved to be all the offense the Scots needed.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory and a signature result for Maryville, which held one of the nation's top-ranked teams scoreless for 90 minutes and ended Trinity's unbeaten start to the season.
