MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville College women's soccer battled through a difficult Southern Athletic Association matchup Sunday afternoon, falling 5-1 to Rhodes at the MC Soccer Complex.
Rhodes struck twice in the opening 19 minutes to build an early advantage. Ella Mullally opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Savvy Palmer doubled the lead in the 19th minute, with Mullally providing the assist.
The Scots created opportunities of their own in the opening half, including a Katie Corley shot that was saved by Rhodes goalkeeper Gabi Garza in the 25th minute. Maryville also earned a pair of corner kicks during the period, but Rhodes carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Rhodes Pulls Away
The Lynx added three goals in a 12-minute stretch early in the second half.
Maddie Carter scored in the 61st minute, then struck again just 1:39 later to complete her brace. Kyleigh Wilson added Rhodes' fifth goal in the 72nd minute, assisted by Lina Kilgore.
Maryville continued to battle and eventually broke through in the closing minutes.
Boyd Gets Scots on the Board
Regan Boyd provided the late spark, scoring an unassisted goal in the 89th minute for her fifth goal of the season.
Boyd finished with three shots and two shots on goal, while Maryville recorded seven total shots and five shots on target.
Paige Silva played all 90 minutes in goal for the Scots, making four saves.
The loss moves Maryville to 4-2-4 overall and 1-1-0 in SAA play, while Rhodes improves to 7-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league action.

The Scots return to action Wednesday, Oct. 14, hosting Sewanee at 6 p.m. at the MC Soccer Complex as SAA play continues.
