MARSHALL, Texas – The Maryville Scots emerged victorious with a 5-3 win over East Texas Baptist at Woods Field on Friday, marking another thrilling chapter in their season. The Scots came out swinging, scoring three decisive runs in the first inning and another in the second, setting the tone for the game.
East Texas Baptist attempted a comeback in the fifth inning, narrowing the score to 4-3 with two timely sacrifice flies. Yet, the Scots kept their cool, breaking away in the ninth when
Colin Dunworth's strategic leadoff walk, stolen base, and advance to third on a groundout paved the way for
Lucas Mendoza's crafty bunt single, securing the insurance run.
From the get-go, Maryville capitalized on every opportunity. Dunworth, a standout junior outfielder, smashed a three-run homer in the opening inning, driving in
Brayden Evans and
Det Dettwiller. In the second, Mendoza doubled and crossed the plate thanks to a throwing miscue after
Masin Hall's steal. Despite the Tigers' late pressure, Maryville's defense held strong, with their early offensive burst proving indispensable.
On the mound, senior pitcher
Kyle Timko was a force to be reckoned with, hurling a complete game over nine innings. He scattered nine hits and three earned runs while fanning four batters. Despite issuing five walks, Timko kept East Texas Baptist under control with 128 pitches, boasting a WHIP of 1.56 and inducing 12 groundouts to anchor the Scots' defense.
Dunworth led the charge offensively, with his three-run homer contributing three RBIs and scoring twice. Mendoza shone with three hits, including a double, and chipped in with an RBI and a run.
Brayden Evans added a hit, a run, and a stolen base, showcasing his defensive prowess with five assists. Timko's complete game effort underscored the Scots' resilience.
Maryville (Tenn.) will meet East Texas Baptist again on Saturday, March 28, at noon, as they continue their journey in Texas.
