Men's Tennis Falls in Conference Nailbiter

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville's men's tennis team faced off against Covenant College on April 1st in a key conference matchup, with the Scots looking to even the score in recent history. Even with multiple close matchups and competitive efforts, Maryville fell 1-6.

Doubles proved to be competitive from the start, but with multiple pairings fighting to come back from down a break in serve early, Maryville was fighting from behind from the very beginning. #2 doubles pair Jackson Meyer and Field Myatt grabbed an early break and held on to take the win 6-4, but it didn't prove to be enough to rally back to get the doubles point.

Singles was even more competitive than doubles, with multiple matches going to full third sets and set tiebreaks. Grant Price put the first point on the board for Maryville against Covenant, winning 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles to pull the Scots to 1-2. Despite this, Covenant took down the rest of the matches down the stretch. James Smith, Steven Fitzsimmons, and Luka Romano all had incredibly close efforts at the #1 singles, #4 singles, and #5 singles positions, but those matches slipped out of reach for Maryville.

"That was the closest 1-6 matchup I've ever been a part of," Head Coach Doug Corbett said. "Hats off to Covenant they have both a strong team and a great culture with their team. We will learn from this and know what areas to work on to be better."

Maryville looks forward to April 3rd, where they play against Truett-McConnell University at home. They look to continue their good history against the Bears, with last year's result being 4-3.
