JACKSON, Miss. - Maryville's women's tennis team looked to close out their season with a win against Belhaven University on Friday, April 17th. In a bit of an unconventional win, the Scots take down the Blazers 7-0 and secure their seed for the conference tournament, starting on April 23rd.
The wins started in doubles for Maryville. #1 pair Calliana Kondolios and McKena Spencer continue their great form on the year, winning with a 6-2 scoreline to clinch the doubles point for the Scots. To add on to the wins, #2 pair Maggie Hackney and Clara Plass establish positive momentum going into the conference tournament with a 6-2 win, sweeping the doubles point for the Scots.
After the doubles matches, due to the forfeiting of singles positions #4, #5, and #6, Maryville clinched the match, pushing their conference record to 5-2. However, the day was not done for the Scots. Hackney added on another point for Maryville at #3 singles, blanking her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Quickly after, Jasmine Muecke took her match at #2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 scoreline to set up the sweep for the Scots. To deliver the final blow, Spencer won at #1 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline to sweep the Blazers and set up positive momentum for the conference tournament.
That match concluded the regular season for the women's tennis team, which proved to be successful within the CCS and gave them an 8-7 overall record. With a team full of newcomers, everyone delivered fantastic results and collectively outperformed the preseason poll results, which placed Maryville in 4th place. Plass and Hackney had notably impressive results in their singles matches, with Plass going 10-5 on the year and Hackney going 9-6, displaying the depth that the Scots have down the lineup. In doubles, Kondolios and Spencer as a pair went 9-6 on the year, and the Josie McRae and Muecke pair went 8-5 together, displaying their prowess as doubles teams and players. Noteworthy wins include Covenant, who were expected to finish 3rd in the CCS, and Hanover College, where the women fought down to the wire to clinch the match 4-3.
