LYNCHBURG, Va. – Maryville edged out Chris. Newport with an 8-7 victory in a 13-inning thriller on Friday. This game marked the Scots' first time starting 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament in team history, making it a landmark win. The Scots rallied with four runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, eventually sealing the victory with two runs in the 13th. It was also the third NCAA tournament victory in program history.
Maryville secured a dramatic victory over the Captains, highlighted by a decisive 13th inning.
Irvin Hernandez initiated the rally with a home run to right field, bringing the score to a tie. Following Hernandez's shot,
Masin Hall singled, and
Brayden Evans added another single to put runners at the corners. Hall then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Earlier, the Scots faced a 6-1 deficit through the first five innings, with the Captains capitalizing on timely hits and a crucial error in the fifth. Despite trailing, Maryville mounted a comeback in the eighth and ninth innings. Hernandez's single in the eighth set the stage for
Det Dettwiller's RBI, and in the ninth, Evans drove in two runs with a single, capitalizing on a throwing error to extend the game into extra innings.
The late innings saw few scoring opportunities for Chris. Newport, as Maryville's defense held firm, including a critical outfield assist and a clean double play.
Xavier Resto, the reliever, delivered a strong performance, allowing just one unearned run over the final three innings to preserve the win. Notably, this game featured the first at-bat of
Xavier Resto's career, adding to the memorable moments of the day.
Kyle Timko started on the mound for Maryville, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits with six runs, four of them earned, while striking out three and walking one. During this game, Timko set a program record for career putouts with his 38th career putout.
Kaden Wimsatt provided a strong relief effort with 5 1/3 scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out three without issuing a walk.
Xavier Resto closed the game with three innings, allowing one unearned run, striking out two, and giving up one hit, securing his fourth win of the season.
Masin Hall scored two runs and collected two hits, including a double. Evans added three hits and drove in two runs. Hernandez crossed the plate three times and contributed a home run, highlighting his offensive impact to go along with a tremendous defensive effort.
The Scots advance in the winners' bracket to face Lynchburg at 2:30 PM. The winner earns a spot in the championship, while the loser will play again right after in an elimination game.
