MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville College women's soccer battled Trine University to a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at the MC Soccer Complex.
The Scots (1-1-2) fell behind early before responding with a pair of goals to take the lead, but Trine (1-2-1) answered in the second half to earn the draw.
Trine struck first in the fifth minute when Maggie McDowell found the back of the net off an assist from Regan Vokal, giving the Thunder a 1-0 advantage.
Maryville quickly responded, however, as Katie Ray leveled the match in the 14th minute. Regan Boyd provided the assist on Ray's first goal of the season, bringing the score even at 1-1.
The Scots continued to pressure the Trine defense throughout the opening half, holding a 6-3 advantage in shots and earning three corner kicks. Trine goalkeeper Johannah Houtkooper made three saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the match tied at halftime.
Maryville took its first lead just 2:14 into the second half.
Katie Cotten scored her second goal of the season at the 47:14 mark to put the Scots ahead 2-1. The goal came just one second after Maryville received a yellow card.
The lead held for nearly 15 minutes before Trine answered in the 63rd minute. Ava Leihgeber scored at 62:19 to bring the Thunder level at 2-2.
Neither team could find the decisive goal over the final 28 minutes.
Maryville goalkeeper Trinity Atkinson made a key save in the 80th minute on a shot from Trine's Erin Scully, while the Scots' defense held the Thunder scoreless through the final 10 minutes.
The Scots finished the afternoon with a 9-6 advantage in shots and put five attempts on goal compared to three for Trine. Maryville also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Cotten led the Scots with four shots, including two on goal, while Ray and Boyd each contributed a goal or assist. Ray, Cotten, and Atkinson each played all 90 minutes.
Atkinson finished with one save in goal for Maryville, while Houtkooper recorded three saves for Trine.
The Scots are back at it tomorrow against former conference foe LaGrange.
