The Maryville College Fighting Scots gave a strong effort for an upset bid over No.15 Wooster in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The tournament host outpaced Maryville in the second half to earn a 70-63 victory. They will advance to the second round to play Capital University after they defeated Randolph-Macon College 68-60 in an earlier elimination contest.
Maryville went to the half tied 33-33 with the nationally ranked Scots from Ohio. MC's inability to threaten from the perimeter with a 4-for-14 effort allowed Wooster to pull away in the second half. Wooster connected on ten three-pointers while shooting 36% from the floor. Wooster won the battle on the boards with a 45-38 advantage.
Wooster (25-4) has a pair of players post double-double efforts. Justin Hallowell tossed in a game-high 23 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Josh Claytor added 15 points and 12 rebounds while Xavier Brown contributed a dozen points.
Maryville (18-10) was led by senior Milton Stanley. The GSAC Player of the Year was 7-of-19 for 21 points. Wes Lambert added 12 points after hitting three baskets from beyond the arc. Senior Donald Rucker closed out his stellar career with 11 rebounds.
