The Maryville College baseball team used a two run, ninth inning rally to defeat the GSAC regular season champion Huntingdon Hawks on "Senior Day" on Sunday afternoon at MC's Scotland Yard.
Trailing 10-9 in their last at-bat, Maryville recorded outs in their first pair of plate appearances. A Nick Dean single and a Travis Scates base hit put MC in scoring position. Chris Hamilton pinch ran for Scates and Jesse Crisp loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Nic Baker was also plunked by the Hawk hurler, receiving an RBI and tying the game 10-10. Senior outfielder Cory Kopec laced a drive into centerfield and the Scots prevailed 11-10.
Maryville rallied the entire day falling behind 4-0 after the visitor's third inning. In the bottom of the inning, MC struck for five runs on five hits, earning a 5-4 lead.
Huntingdon answered in the fourth inning with a four run, five hits performance giving the visitors an 8-5 lead.
Trailing 9-5, Maryville posted a pair of runs in the fifth and repeated the task in the sixth. A pair of Nick Dean RBI's in the fifth and key RBI's by Blake Gentry and Mikee Moore pulled the Scots to a 10-9 deficit going into the ninth.
Wes Dobson was strong in relief of Keylon Holloway for the Scots. Holloway scattered nine hits in 4.1 innings, but Dobson allowed only two hits in 4.1 innings of work. Austin Patton earned the win in relief and advances to 2-3 on the season.
MC's 14 hit attack was led by Cory Kopec (4-5, 2R, 1 RBI), Blake Gentry (2-5, 1R, 2 RBI), and Nick Dean (2-3, 1R, 2RBI). Jeremey Goolsby smashed a homerun and paced the team with his 3 RBI's.
Huntingdon falls to 26-11 overall and 9-3 in GSAC challenges. Maryville advances to 18-18 and ends the regular season with a 5-7 mark in league play.
The MC diamondmen will prepare for the upcoming GSAC Baseball Tournament in LaGrange, Georgia this upcoming weekend.
