Box Score

MC Sports Information

The No.1 seeded Huntingdon College Hawks needed a two-run rally in the 9th inning to come from behind and defeat the Maryville College Diamond Scots in the first round of the Great South Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament hosted by LaGrange College on Friday afternoon.

Maryville claimed an early lead in the first inning when Nick Dean scored Cory Kopec, who had earlier singled, on an infield single. With two outs, Jesse Crisp singled up the middle scoring Mikee More and Blake Gentry. The three run, three hit inning put the Scots up 3-0.

MC extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Kopec singled and later scored on a Nick Dean sacrifice fly. A Crisp walk with the bases juiced earned MC's third baseman his third RBI of the afternoon as Moore scored.

The Hawks cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a Joseph Odom home run off reliever Wes Dobson. The momentum carried over to the next inning where Huntingdon tallied three runs on three hits making the score 5-4 after seven complete innings in favor of the Scots.

Both teams put up goose eggs in the eighth and MC could not score in the ninth to pad their lead.

Huntingdon led off with a pair of doubles putting the winning run on second base. The Hawks' All-Conference catcher was intentionally walked to load the bases. Trey Smith singled up the middle off reliever Austin Patton to tie the game 5-5. Austin White singled off Patton through the left side to give Huntingdon the tournament victory.

Kopec, Moore, and Nic Baker paced MC's nine hit attach with a pair of hits each. MC's Trevor Bracket was stellar in the no-decision for Maryville going six innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run. Wes Dobson suffered the loss for Maryville in relief. The Hawk's touched the lefty for five runs and six hits in a pair of innings of work.

Maryville (18-19) will face the Piedmont/LaGrange loser in the double-elimination tournament with a first-pitch slated for 4:00 on Saturday.
