Scots poach Panthers; open USA South competition with win

Box Score

The women's soccer team at Maryville College opened up USA South competition in fine fashion, defeating the LaGrange by the score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee.

The Lady Scots got on the board when Samantha Turner found the back of the net on a free kick in the 31st minute. The Scots would dominate the play in the first half having the better of the action and possessing the ball on LaGrange's half of the field for a majority of the time.

Maryville would get the only goal of the second half as Phoebe Leo would beat the LaGrange keeper with the help of Taylor Emerson in the 67th. The day belonged to the Scots as they outshot the Panthers 17-9 and had more chances on corner kicks at 7-4.

"We played a solid game against a team with a good record, it feels a lot better than last time we played LaGrange," said head coach Pepe Fernandez. "We had to work hard but it feels good to get our first USA South victory."

The win brings the Scots to 2-1 on the young season and 1-0 in USA South competition. Maryville will be in action again next Saturday when they travel to Christopher Newport. The game is schedule for a 1:00 pm start.
