Box Score Maryville College freshman standout Jaumonee Byrd had a break out performance of 14 points and 15 rebounds against Methodist University on Sunday evening, but it was not enough as the Monarchs pushed past the Scots with a strong second half to secure a 65-61 USA South victory.
Maryville jumped out to a 34-26 lead as they connected on 45% of their shots, including a 4-for-10 effort from long distance. Methodist deposited only 28% of their shots to give the Scots an eight point lead at the half.
The squads reversed roles in the second half as Methodist outscored MC 39-27 in the second period with a 50% effort from the floor. The Scots could only manage a 27% success rate in the closing minutes and could not find their touch from beyond the arc.
Methodist (4-8, 1-2 USA South) was paced by Tabias Hilliard and Austin Pack who each dropped a dozen points. Keemon Ingram added 10 points.
Maryville (6-7, 3-3 USA South) was led by Byrd's double-double performance. The Douglasville, Georgia native went 5-for-11 from the field and 4-for-8 from the free throw line. He tallied a game-high 15 boards with seven offensive caroms.
The Scots will host Ferrum College for their next challenge on Saturday, February 12th. Tip-off in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium is scheduled for 4:00 following the matchup between the MC women and Greensboro.
