Box Score In a key USA South contest between two of the top teams, Maryville reigned supreme to Piedmont in women's soccer action on Wednesday night on the campus of Maryville College.
The first half belonged to Maryville even if the scoreboard didn't show it. The Scots out shot the Lions four to two in the first half while also earning four corner opportunities to only three for the Lions.
In the 62nd minute defending USA South Player of the year Ashley Howarth would find the back of the net as the senior took the ball across the box before firing a missle into the far corner. It was the senior's ninth goal of the season. Eight minutes later, in the 70th minute, sophomore Monica Besbris scored her fourth goal of the season with the assist going to fellow sophomore Allyson Hale. Piedmont would add a goal late to make the final 2-1. Maryville out shot Piedmont eight to four in the second half.
"It was fitting that Ashley scored on senior night," said head coach Pepe Fernandez."She and the rest of the seniors have had great careers and I'm glad we had an opportunity to send them out as winners on senior night."
The win brings Maryville to 9-2-2 overall and 7-1-1 in USA South action. The Scots will be in action on Saturday when they travel to LaGrange for a USA South match. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
