Box Score The Maryville College baseball team used a four run, last inning rally to earn their first USA South series victory with a 5-4 win over Averett University on Sunday.
MC took the lead in the third inning when Garrett Gresham scored an unearned run on a Cougar miscue. The Scots returned the favor in the fifth inning when Zach Boraski scored on a Maryville error. Averett plated runs in each of the final three innings, but MC would use their final at-bat to claim the league win.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jacon Ashe struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. Garrett Gresham reached first on an error by the third baseman. A passed ball sent runners to second and third and then Dan Oaklief deposited a single to right field scoring Ashe. Andrew Mabini reached first on an infield single, driving in Gresham. With runners on second and third, Landon Talley was intentionally walked. With two outs a swing by Travis Scates made contact with the catcher's mitt and catchers interference was called scoring Oaklief. Jesse Crisp stepped to the plate and earned a walk-off RBI as he walked on five pitches for the game-winner.
MC's Chris Sutherland was stellar on the mound tossing a two-hitter over seven innings of work. The sophomore induced 10 ground ball outs and kept his composure while the Scots defense committed six errors on the afternoon. Cody Midgett earned his first win of the season tossing the final two innings, allowing only two hits and a pair of earned runs.
Maryville advances to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in USA South play. Averett falls to 3-2, and 1-2 within the USA South.
The Scots will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to challenge Carson Newman College.
