The Maryville College baseball team fell to 4-4 on the season and 2-4 in USA South action following a three-game series loss to No. 8 Christopher Newport University.
On Friday, MC dropped their USA South road debut by the score of 15-3. Matt Dyer suffered the loss after scattering eight hits over four innings. He struck out six Captains while surrendering four earned runs. Offensively, Maryville tallied seven hits. Zack Blonder and Travis Scates each went 2-for-3 at the plate with each securing an RBI.
Saturday's double header began with a 4-2 loss at the hands of CNU. Trevor Brackett was tagged for the loss after a strong six inning on the hill. He scattered only five hits, striking out five while giving up no earned runs. Nick Dean was the offensive leader for the Scots who equaled the Captains six hit attack. Dean finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Shawn Ambrose, Dan Oaklief, Zack Blonder, and Garrett Gresham each stroked a base hit to help MC's offense.
In the series finale, CNU pounded out 15 hits to earn an 11-1 win for the series sweep. The Scots defense had three errors and did hot support the hurling effort of Chris Sutherland. Sutherland surrendered no earned runs in three innings of work, but was saddled with the loss as CNU plated six unearned runs on six hits. Nick Dean, Landon Talley, Zack Blonder, and Chris Hamilton were the only Scots to record singles in the losing effort.
Maryville will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they host Emory & Henry in a non-conference matchup. First pitch against the Wasps is scheduled for 4:00 on MC's Scotland Yard.
