Box Score The Maryville College baseball team was eliminated from the 2013 USA South Baseball Tournament just after midnight on Saturday morning following a 6-2 loss to LaGrange College in Wilson, North Carolina's Fleming Stadium.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead when MC starter Chris Sutherland surrendered a two-out RBI single. LaGrange expanded their advantage to 6-0 in the sixth inning when three hits and a pair of free passes off a combination of Sutherland and reliever Cody Midgett pushed five runs across the plate.
The Scots looked for a late rally scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A Travis Scates double sent Zack Blonder home before a double by Garrett Gresham sent Scates to score MC's last run.
MC's Sutherland falls to 3-5 on the season after tossing 5.1 innings surrendering only six hits. Nick Bowers and Taylor Denton combined for three innings of shutout relief, giving up only one hit.
Maryville's seven hit attack was paced by Nick Dean, Travis Scates, and Garrett Gresham ,each recording a pair of hits in the losing effort.
LaGrange advances in the tournament and goes to 18-16 on the season. The Scots fall to 16-22 and will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday to challenge Emory University in a non-conference matchup. First pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 3:30.
