Box Score A seven run fourth inning pushed the LaGrange College Panthers past the Maryville College diamondmen in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday on MC's Scotland Yard. The Panthers took the series with a 12-4 victory as the Scots celebrated "Senior Day".
The Panthers took advantage of an MC error to push across a run in the first inning. MC hurler Chris Sutherland induced three consecutive LaGrange hitters to pop up to end the early threat.
A one-out safety squeeze gave LaGrange their second run in the fourth before a trio of Maryville errors allowed six unearned runs to cross the plate and give the Panthers an 8-0 advantage.
LaGrange tacked on a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly making the score 9-0.
MC broke up the shutout in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout by Zack Blonder, droving in Nick Dean and an unearned run on a Panther infield error. Moving to the seventh inning, the Scots trailed 9-2.
LaGrange added three runs on three hits in the seventh to make the score 12-2.
Maryville catcher Shawn Ambrose laced a two-run double off the left field wall in the eighth to cut the score to 12-4 driving in Jacob Ashe and Zach Toner.
LaGrange starting pitcher Robby Williams earned the win with seven innings of quality work on the mound. The Scots managed only six hits off the righty as he gave up only one earned run on the day. The Panthers tallied 19 hits off six MC pitchers while their defense committed a season high four errors.
MC's Nick Dean was the only Scot collecting a pair of hits, ending the regular season going 2-for-3 and finishing with a .389 average for the season.
LaGrange advances to 15-15 overall and 13-11 within the USA South. Maryville falls to 15-20 and 10-14 within the league.
