Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team utilized a pair of late baskets and a steal to secure a key USA South road victory over North Carolina Wesleyan by the score of 72-69 on Saturday evening in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The Bishop's Josh Morrison connected on a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining to tie the game 67-67. Following a free throw by MC's Jaumonee Byrd, Morrison connected on a pair of free throws giving NC Wesleyan a 69-68 lead with less than a minute remaining. Byrd hit a late layup to put Maryville up with 25 seconds, giving the Bishops one last opportunity to claim the win. MC's senior point guard J.P. Burris recorded a steal with seven seconds left on the clock and Byrd deposited his 24th point with a bucket as time expired.
North Carolina Wesleyan (7-7, 2-1 USA South) was paced by Morrison's 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The guard also led the Bishops with eight rebounds while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Shannon Huff added 13 points while David Gurganus finished with 10 points.
Maryville (10-6, 6-0 USA South) used Byrd's 24 point effort to secure their sixth consecutive victory. The sophomore post standout went 10-for-13 from the field while hauling down a team-high seven rebounds. Oscar Butler shared Byrd's numbers on the boards while sinking 16 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Christian Ford and Spencer Shoffner each deposited three treys finishing with 13 and nine points respectively.
Coach Randy Lambert's Scots will prepare for a key USA South matchup against Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia next Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 4:00.
