Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team used a strong second half and a late rally to earn a tough road victory over Emory & Henry College by the score of 75-71 in Emory, Virginia in King Center Gymnasium on Bob Johnson Court on Tuesday evening.
Trailing 70-68 with 1:33 remaining Maryville's Logan Brewer blocked a Wasp shot, hauled down a defensive rebound, and was fouled. He knocked down a pair of free throws evening the score 70-70. The next possession Tanner Torres stole a pass and found Christian Ford who deposited a layup with 57 seconds left, giving MC the lead for good.
The Wasps outscored Maryville 39-35 in the first half on 48% shooting, including a 58% effort from beyond the arc. The Scots kept pace by out rebounding E&H 20-16 while hitting 41% from the field.
Maryville was paced in scoring by Spencer Shoffner. The Oak Ridge native finished with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting including a 4-for-9 effort from long distance. Tanner Torres added 14 points after sinking four trey and Oscar Butler had a complete effort with 13 points and seven rebounds going 4-for-12 from the field. The Scots deposited 9-of-21 three pointers while sinking 22-of-26 free throws to earn the non-conference victory.
The Scots (1-1) will now prepare to host The University of the South (Sewanee) on Saturday in the Cooper Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
