Box Score The Maryville College Scots used their depth and a strong surge before the half to secure a 97-68 victory over Johnson University on Monday evening in Maryville's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Royals (2-10) shot 78% while jumping to a 16-8 advantage, but the Scots tied the game 20-20 at the 10:22 mark and went on a 12-2 run to march to a 51-34 halftime advantage. At the break Johnson's Jordon McClendon tallied 10 points, but Maryville's Jaumonee Byrd had thrown down 21 while Logan Brewer had added 10.
Maryville out paced the visitors 46-34 in the second half to move to 3-1 on the season. The Scots finished 39-for-82 from the field (47%) and 9-for-32 (28%) from beyond the arc. MC also utilized 49 points from their bench to push past the Royals.
Johnson University was paced by McClendon's 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Kenny White added 12 points and Rickey Bowen Jr. tossed in 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Maryville was led by Jaumonee Byrd's 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Brewer finished with 14 points while going 6-for-6 from the floor. Byrd and Spencer Shoffner paced MC's 40 rebound effort with six boards each. Christian Ford directed the offense with eight of MC's 31 team assists.
The Scots will now prepare for the Emory University Invitational in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday. They will challenge Oglethorpe University at 2:00 on Saturday and Emory University at 4:00 on Sunday.
