Box Score The Maryville College Lady Scots soccer team advanced to the USA South Athletic Conference finals with a 1-0 upset shutout victory over No.1 seeded Meredith College on Friday evening in Martinsville, Virginia.
Maryville College freshman forward Kirsten Alcorn scored from the right hand side at the 40th minute of the first half as the ball carried the past the USA South Rookie of the Year and Meredith goalkeeper Jaisa Loch to give the Scots a 1-0 early lead.
Maryville had a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the first half, but the Avenging Angels attacked constantly in the second half, out-shooting MC 6-2. Mandy Marshall, replacing Rachel Taylor in goal for the Scots after an injury, had a strong second half turning away three shots on goal. The pair of MC keepers shared the shutout in goal.
In a late surge of corner kicks by Meredith, MC's Sarah Wickman turned away a Meredith shot attempt after keeper Mandy Marshall had already punched away an initial attack to preserve the victory.
Alcorn's fourth goal of the season sends Maryville to 13-6-1 on the season while Meredith ends their season 13-5-2.
The Scots will play for the league title on Saturday in Martinsville at 5:00 p.m. against No.3 seeded Methodist or No.7 seeded North Carolina Wesleyan.
