Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team advanced to 5-3 on the season with an 84-56 non-conference road victory over Johnson University in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee on Friday evening.
The Scots used a 56% shooting effort from beyond the arc in the first half (9-for-16) while converting 21 offensive points off Royal turnovers to establish a 43-23 halftime advantage. MC out scored Johnson 41-33 to close out the game with a 52% shooting effort from the field as the home town team did not connect on a trey on the evening (0-for-10).
Johnson (2-12) was paced by Denzel Mills' 12 points while Kenny White poured in 10.
Maryville (5-3) had five players finish with double digit scoring including a double-double effort by Jaumonee Byrd. Byrd led all rebounders with 10 while finishing with 10 points. The Scots' bomb squad hit 14-of-28 three pointers and were led by Spencer Shoffner's 4-for-8 effort from beyond the arc for 12 points. Christian Ford and Calvin Songster each found their range going 3-for-5 from long distance for 12 points each. Logan Brewer was strong in the paint with a 10-point effort. MC's guards did a good job distributing and taking care of the ball with 24 assists. Jaylen Bowyer finished with nine assists and five steals while Ford and Tanner Torres combined for an additional nine assists.
The Scots will take a two game win streak into the weekend as they host Birmingham Southern (5-1) on Sunday, December 14. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
