Box Score 2 The Maryville College Diamondmen split the first pair of games of a three-game weekend series with Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon. Maryville claimed the first game 11-9 before dropping the nightcap 16-7 on MC's Scotland Yard.
Maryville's Travis Scates went 4-for-5 with a grand slam to pace the Scots' 18 hit attack in the first challenge against the Pioneers. Centerfielder Garrett Gresham went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs. Landon Talley stroked a triple en route to a 3-for-4 outing that included a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. The offensive surge allowed MC starter Trevor Brackett to cruise through five innings of scoreless work. Brackett earned the win with 5.2 inning of work, scattering nine hits and striking out four. Robbie Britt and Brad Hampton tossed effective relief while Matt Dyer earned his first save with 1.2 innings of work, striking out two and surrendering no hits.
The Scots (3-1) dropped their first game of the season as Transylvania's Braden Johnson silenced MC's bats for the first four innings of game two. Johnson earned the win with six innings of word, allowing four hits and only one earned run. Maryville's David Clifford evened his record on the mound to 1-1 after surrendering four runs and five hits in 2.2 innings. Maryville managed only seven hits while the Pioneers pounded out 17 hits to even the series.
The final game of the home series will take place at 1:00 on Sunday.
