Box Score The Maryville College baseball team advanced to 4-1 on the season by claiming the weekend series from Transylvania University on Sunday with a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Pioneers.
After splitting Saturday's challenges, Transylvania took an early lead when Spencer Miller drove home Hunter Jones. Maryville could not push across a run in the first five innings off Transy's Shelby Dixon.
Trailing 1-0, the Scots touched Dixon for four earned runs and chased the talented lefty from the mound. The scoring started when Zack Blonder drove in Matt Jones with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. John McDermott broke the game open with a double to right center scoring Landon Talley and Nick Dean. Greg Burland sent McDermott home to finish the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Leading 4-1, Maryville tacked on an insurance run in the 7th when Landon Talley pushed Garrett Gresham across the plate with a single off the field umpire up the middle.
Maryville's Seth Debity earned his first collegiate win on the mound with a stellar seven inning performance, scattering four hits and striking out four Pioneers. Matt Dyer closed the door for the second consecutive day with a pair of shutout innings.
Offensively, the Scots pounded out 10 hits led by Garrett Gresham, Nick Dean, and Greg Burland who each stroked a pair of hits.
Transylvania falls to 1-2 on the season while MC advances to 4-1. The Scots will host Emory & Henry College on Tuesday. First-pitch on Scotland Yard is scheduled for 3:00.
