Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team earned a key USA South double header sweep of Averett University on Saturday claiming the first game 9-2 before wining the nightcap 6-3.
In the first challenge of the series Maryville pounced on the Cougars with eight runs in their first pair of at-bats. In the bottom of the first, the Scots' Nick Dean drove in Garrett Gresham with a single to left field. An infield RBI single by Zack Blonder plated Chris Hamilton for MC's second run. Travis Scates sent Nick Dean and Landon Talley after taking advantage of an Averett error.
Leading 4-0, Maryville doubled their advantage with a four hit, four run attack in their second at-bat. Blonder singled to the left-center gap to score Nick Dean and Dan Oaklief. A two-out, two-RBI single by John McDermott made the score 8-0.
Nick Dean laced an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth to give Maryville their final run of the victory.
MC hurler Trevor Bracket cruised with the big lead. The right-hander scattered five hits in eight innings of work allowing only one earned run. Robbie Britt came in to close the game allowing a pair of hits and one earned run.
Sophomore designated hitter Dan Oaklief finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Chris Hamilton, Nick Dean, and Zack Blonder each posted a pair of hits in MC's 13 hit offensive attack.
In the second game, Maryville's four pitchers held the Cougar bats to only four hits. Sean Holton pitched a strong four innings in relief of David Clifford. Holton allowed only one hit in 14 batters faced. Joe Jones (2-0) earned the win tossing a strong eighth while Matt Dyer closed the game for his third save of the season.
Averett got on the scoreboard in the first inning of the nightcap. The Cougars took advantage of a pair of walks and an RBI groundout to lead 1-0 in their first at-bat.
Zack Blonder laced a two-out double down the right field line to score Nick Dean and Landon Talley to put the Scots up 2-1 in the first inning.
A two-out, bases loaded double by Jeffrey Younkins down the leftfield line gave Averett a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Nick Dean and Landon Talley pulled off a double steal putting runners in scoring position for Zack Blonder. Blonder promptly drove Dean home with a groundout to even the score 3-3.
Maryville took the lead in the eighth when John McDermott led off with a double and Matt Jones drove him in with a single up the middle. Chris Hamilton cleared the bases with a two-out double to make the score 6-3.
MC's offense was paced by Nick Dean's 3-for-3 outing that featured a pair of runs scored. Catcher Travis Scates went 3-for-4 while Zack Blonder tallied a game-high three RBIs. Matt Jones finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Averett falls to 4-9 on the season and 0-5 in USA South challenges. Maryville advances to 8-3 on the season and 3-2 in league play following the doubleheader sweep.
The series will conclude on Sunday on Scotland Yard with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
