Box Score The Maryville College baseball team knocked off the USA South leading Covenant College Scots by the score of 9-0 on Friday evening.
MC's Trevor Brackett limited the league's top hitting team to only three hits in a complete game victory on the mound. Brackett (5-1) struck out five and allowed only three hits to Covenant's third baseman Perry Rigby to earn the shutout.
Offensively, the hometown Scots collected 16 hits off Covenant starter Garrett Kriston and reliever Spencer Smith.
Maryville broke the game open early with a seven run second inning. RBI singles by Dan Oaklief, Jacob Ashe, Garrett Gresham, and Matt Jones served as a prelude to Landon Talley's two-out, two-RBI single up the middle. With the score 5-0 Zack Blonder and Travis Scates added back-to-back RBI singles giving MC a 7-0 advantage.
A two-out double in the bottom of the third inning by Matt Jones scored Garrett Gresham after the speedy centerfielder collected his third consecutive hit of the day. MC added an unearned run later in the inning on a Landon Talley RBI infield single to make the score 9-0 after three complete innings.
Garrett Gresham paced the Scots' offense with a 4-for-5 effort. Travis Scates finished 3-for-4 while Matt Jones, Landon Talley, Zack Blonder, and Jacob Ashe each tallied a pair of hits. Talley led MC with three RBIs.
The victory advances Maryville to 15-17 overall and 10-12 in the USA South. Covenant falls to 21-12 and 15-7 in league play.
The dual between the USA South Scots will continue on Saturday with a double header on Scotland Yard. First pitch is slated for 1:00. Head Coach Paul Henry and his staff will honor their ten senior student-athletes before the twinbill begins.
