Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team claimed the key USA South series with the Covenant College Scots with a split on Saturday. Covenant took the twin bill opener 19-9 before MC rallied to claim the series finale with a 7-6 victory.
The USA South's top pair of offenses combined for 33 hits in the second game of a three-game series. Covenant College won the battle of the Scots, defeating Maryville College on MC's Scotland Yard by the score of 19-9 on Saturday afternoon.
After being shut out the previous challenge, Covenant put together a four hit attack in their first at-bat to take an early 2-0 lead of MC starter Seth Debity.
A Chris Rollins sacrifice fly gave the Georgian Scots a 3-0 advantage before MC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third.
Covenant's Will Carlton blasted a solo homerun to make the score 4-1 in the fourth before Maryville answered with a two-out RBI single by senior Jacob Ashe in the bottom of the fourth.
Covenant broke the game open in the sixth when third baseman Perry Rigby blasted a grand slam over the right center field fence to make the score 8-2.
The visitors tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh. They took advantage of a Maryville miscue while adding four hits off MC reliever Dan Roselli.
Trailing 10-2, Maryville put five runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh taking advantage of four hits and a Covenant error.
The 10-7 ballgame was quickly turned in to a lopsided Covenant victory when the Scots banged out seven hits in the eighth to score nine more runs making the score 19-7.
RBIs by Nick Dean and Jacob Ashe gave Maryville their final pair of runs.
MC's Seth Debity (3-3) suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering four earned runs while scattering 11 hits.
Maryville's offense pounded out 13 hits in the loss. Senior Andrew Mabini finished 3-for-4 while fellow senior Jacob Ashe was 2-for-4 with a team high three RBIs.
MC would have to bounce back after a powerful offensive display. The Scots' senior right hander Matt Dyer cooled off Covenant's bats with a complete game win. Dyer, who started the season as MC's closer, limited Covenant to six hits, allowing only four earned runs while striking out four.
Maryville trailed 4-0 after the first three innings, but the hometown Scots tallied six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zack Blonder drove in Landon Talley and David Shiplett scored Blonder. Garrett Gresham cleared the loaded bases with a triple and MC finished their scoring with an unearned run.
Leading 6-4, Maryville added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Shiplett scored on a double steal.
The seventh run proved important as Covenant's Will Carlton connected for a two-run homerun to make the score 7-6. Dyer promptly closed the door for the complete game senior day win.
Senior centerfielder Garrett Gresham paced the offense with a 3-for-4 effort. Gresham also collected a team-high three RBIs. John McDermott added a pair of hits.
The split moves Maryville to 16-18 on the season and 11-13 in USA South action. Covenant falls to 22-13 and 16-8 within the league.
Maryville will travel to Berry College on Tuesday before ending their season next weekend at Piedmont College.
