Box Score 2 The Maryville College diamondmen hosted No.14 Rhodes College for a non-conference midweek challenge on Wednesday. The Lynx took a pair of games from the Scots by the scores of 13-8 and 6-4.
A Garrett Gresham single and stolen base put Maryville in scoring position in the first inning of game one. Shortstop Nick Dean promptly singled up the middle sending Gresham home for the game's first run.
The Lynx answered in the top of the second inning with nine runs. Rhodes' rally featured five walks and five hits, including a pair of two-RBI doubles by Brendan DePoy and Pat Kilkenny.
Trailing 9-1, Maryville put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Dan Oaklief sent Zack Blonder and John McDermott home with a single up the middle making the score 9-3 after four complete innings.
A pair of hits and a wild pitch put the Lynx up 10-3 in the fifth.
Run scoring singles by Garrett Gresham and Matt Jones capped a five-hit two run bottom of the sixth. Going into the final inning MC trailed 10-5.
Rhodes closed out their plate appearances with four additional hits in the seventh scoring three runs. The Scots scored three times in their last at-bat with RBIs by Dan Oaklief, Garrett Gresham, and Nick Dean.
Maryville's 15 hit attack was paced by Garret Gresham (4-for-5) and Matt Jones (3-for-5). Rhodes took advantage of seven walks while pounding out 13 hits. David Clifford suffered the loss for MC allowing seven earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
The Scots put three runs on the scoreboard in their first at-bat in the second challenge. MC took advantage of a pair of walks and an RBI single by Nick Dean to claim an early 3-0 lead.
A Matt Jones opposite field single sent Nick Reynolds home to give Maryville a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Rhodes tied the game in the top of the fifth behind a Brendan DePoy two-RBI pinch-hit single and a two-out, two RBI triple by leadoff hitter Bill Munson.
The Lynx took a 5-4 lead in the sixth taking advantage of a Scots' defensive miscue. An unearned run crossed the plate after a two-out Logan Booksh RBI single.
Rhodes extended their advantage to 6-4 in their final offensive attack with another two-out RBI single by Ryan Olive scoring Justin Genter who earlier doubled.
The Rhodes comeback overshadowed a solid pitching performance by senior right-hander Matt Dyer. Dyer tossed five innings and scattered six hits allowing four earned runs. Cody Akers (0-1) took the loss in relief after allowing only one earned run in 1.1 innings of work.
With the sweep Rhodes advances to 23-6 while the Scots fall to 11-14 on the season.
Maryville will travel this weekend to Greensboro College for a key USA South road series.
