Box Score The Maryville College baseball team concluded their 2014 spring season with a 5-4 loss at the hands of Piedmont College. The Lions swept the USA South weekend series with the Scots by the scores of 11-2, 3-2, and 5-4.
On Friday, Piedmont posted 11 runs on 13 hits while the Scots could only manage four hits and one earned run off Lion starter Matt Lisk (5-1). MC's Trevor Brackett (5-2) took the loss on the mound after 4.1 innings of work. Zack Blonder went -2-for-4 and John McDermott produced the Scots' lone RBI with a solo homerun.
The Lions claimed the series on Saturday by scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth to earn a tough 3-2 league victory. Piedmont's Allen Tokarz (5-1) earned the win with five innings of solid relief and Josh Thomas shut down the Scots for his first save of the season. MC's Matt Dyer(3-4) suffered the loss in a complete game effort. The senior right-hander allowed two earned runs while striking out four. Six different Scots tallied base hits with Matt Jones stroking a double and Travis Scates and David Shiplett producing Maryville's RBIs.
The series finale saw the Scots rally from a 5-1 deficit, but Piedmont's Jacob Brewster earned his 8th save of the season to preserve the one-run win and series sweep. Maryville's Seth Debity (3-4) tossed six innings, scattering nine hits in the loss on the mound. Piedmont's Chris Goershel (6-3) earned the win after allowing only a pair of runs in seven innings of work. MC's ten hits attack was paced by Garrett Gresham (2-for-4), Zack Blonder (2-for-5), and John McDermott (2-for-5). Andrew Mabini led MC with a pair of key RBIs.
The sweep moves Piedmont to 25-14 on the season and 17-10 within the league. Maryville concludes their season 16-22 and 11-16 in USA South challenges. Maryville finishes in 8th place in the USA South standings with Nick Dean taking the league batting title with a .401 average this season. Senior centerfielder Garrett Gresham was 4th in the league with his .366 average while finishing 2nd in stolen bases with 20. Zack Blonder finished 5th in the USA South in RBIs with his 33 runs driven in this spring. The Scots finished 4th collectively with their .288 team batting average.
