The Maryville College diamondmen swept a key USA South doubleheader at Greensboro College by the scores of 5-4 and 9-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The Maryville College baseball team used a two-out RBI single by Dan Oaklief in the 12th inning to defeat the Greensboro Pride in the three-game series opener.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when John McDermott singled to centerfield driving in Zack Blonder.
A single, walk, triple, and sacrifice fly quickly put the Scots down 3-1 in the fourth inning.
The Pride tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth following a double and RBI single.
The Scots rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The two-out rally began with an RBI single by Nick Dean scoring McDermott who led off the inning with a hit. Landon Talley promptly laced a single to centerfield scoring Matt Jones and Garrett Gresham.
Oaklief's heroics came three innings later. Travis Scates singled and David Shiplett ran for the Scots' catcher. Oaklief stroked a single to right field scoring Shiplett.
Joe Jones finished off his 4.2 innings of relief to preserve the tough USA South road victory. Jones allowed only one hit and no earned runs to move to 1-2 on the season. Trevor Brackett tossed 7.1 innings while getting the no-decision. He scattered nine hits, struck out three, while allowing four earned runs.
MC's offense was paced by Matt Jones (3-for-6) and John McDermott (3-for-4). Nick Dean, Landon Talley, and Jacob Ashe each tallied a pair of hits to bolster the Scots' 15 hit attack.
In the day's nightcap, Maryville exploded for 19 hits and gave MC hurler Seth Debity enough run support to earn his third win of the season. Debity (3-2) tossed six complete innings scattering eight hits while allowing just one earned run. The bullpen of Brad Hampton, Zack May, and Danny Roselli combined for three inning of three hit relief.
The Scots scored three runs in each of their first three innings to cruise to the victory. MC's offense was paced by Nick Dean's 4-for-5 performance. Garrett Gresham, Landon Talley, and Zack Blonder each tallied three hits. Blonder and Talley combined for seven RBIs.
With the sweep Maryville advances to 13-14 while the Pride falls to 3-23.
The series will conclude in Greensboro with a 1:00 first pitch at Greensboro's Leonard Park.
