Box Score Maryville College's baseball team took the Greensboro College Pride to extra innings for the second time in the weekend's three-game USA South series. The Scots pulled out the opener, but the host Pride took the series finale 5-4 in 12 innings on Sunday evening.
The Scots took an early lead in their first at-bat. Back-to-back doubles by Matt Jones and Nick Dean gave MC a 1-0 advantage. A two-out single by John McDermott to left field sent Dean home to make the score 2-0.
Greensboro answered in their first plate appearance scoring on a two-out RBI single off MC starter Matt Dyer.
The Pride took the lead in the fourth by scoring a pair of runs on a pair of two-out singles.
Trailing 3-2, Maryville tied the game in the seventh when Nick Dean drove in Chris Hamilton with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Greensboro took the lead in the bottom of the eighth off MC reliever Tyler Hopkins. The Pride took advantage of a Scots' fielding miscue to tally an unearned run.
Going into Maryville's final at-bat Greensboro led 4-3.
The Scots rallied to send the game into extra innings when Dan Oaklief recorded a pinch hit single and advanced on a passed ball and fielder's choice. Nick Dean deposited another sacrifice fly up the middle and Oaklief tied the game 4-4.
The Pride earned the victory off reliever Zack May. The home team singled and stole second. With one out second baseman J.P. Lisk sent Cody York home for the winning run.
With the victory Greensboro advances to 4-23 on the season while the Scots fall to 13-15.
Maryville will next travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina to challenge the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College for a key USA South series.
