Wasps' 3-point barrage too much for Scots, 91-78

Box Score

A barrage of eight straight 3-pointers by the Emory & Henry College Wasps were too much for Maryville to overcome in the final 13 minutes, as the Wasps gave the Scots their first loss of the season, 91-78.

Myles Turner, John Shelor and Chase Branscomb combined for an 8-of-8 effort in the final 13:13 from behind the arc following a 3:42 drought without a field goal.

The loss marks the first for Maryville this season, as the Wasps avenge an 81-70 loss to Maryville on Saturday.

The Scots started the first half sluggish, falling behind, 14-2 in the opening five minutes of action.

With 9:55 left in the half, Maryville trailed 21-14, as Lambert called his squad together during Colt Nokes' free throws. The Scots gave up two quick lay-ins, trailing 25-14, before Lambert's message sank in to Shoffner.

The senior took the game on his shoulder, bucketing back-to-back old fashioned 3-point plays – both coming on offensive rebounds and put backs. Shoffner cut the lead to 27-22 with 7:20 showing on the clock, but the senior would again work his magic.

Shoffner pulled down his third offensive board in 90 seconds, laying in the put back for a 30-24 score. Jaylen Bowyer would grab a steal and a lay-up, before Dante Hoppa would pull the game to within one – 30-29 – behind an offensive put back.

Noah Walker would slam home a dunk in the lane for the Wasps on the next possession, but the Scots would hold on.

Maryville would pull down three offensive boards in a row, before Spicer would sink a long 3-pointer from the corner off a Bowyer assist to knot the game at 32-all with 3:43 remaining in the first half.

Spicer would find his second trey off the assist from Hoppa to give the Scots their first lead of the game, 35-34, with 2:12 remaining before half.

Both teams would trade points to go to the locker rooms deadlocked at 40-all.

Spicer opened the second half, just as he had ended the first. Spicer bucketed his third long ball of the night giving the Scots their biggest lead of the night, 43-40, with only 41 seconds off the clock.

Myles Turner would split three Maryville defenders, to knot the game at 43, before Bowyer's old-fashioned 3-pointer put the Scots back up by a trio.

Emory & Henry would again even the score at 50-all, off the trey from Ryan Gravely.

However, Spicer buried his fourth 3-pointer of the evening off the Bowyer assist, before a fade-away jumper by Logan Brewer at the 13:58 mark to give Maryville its biggest lead of the night, 55-50.

A trey by Emanuell Garcia followed by two charity tosses by Emier Bowman would extend the Scots lead to seven, 61-54 with 12:13 left in the game.

Maryville held the Wasps without a field goal for 3:42, as Emory & Henry had to settle for free throws. Maryville led 64-57, before the Wasps broke the silence.

Chase Branscomb bucketed a long three, before grabbing a steal. The Maryville turnover would allow another long ball – this time from Myles Turner – to cut Maryville's lead to only one, 64-63.

Turner found his second-consecutive trey to go on a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the second half, 66-64 with 8:34 showing on the clock.

Branscomb continued the trend following a lay-in by Brewer, bucketing Emory & Henry's fourth-straight 3-pointer, as Maryville trailed 69-66 with 7:47 left in the regional contest.

The long-range onslaught would continue, as the Wasps went on an 18-2 run. Shelor connected off the assist from Turner, before Branscomb would find his third straight off the assist from Clif Conley. With 6:07 remaining, Maryville would trail 75-68.

Shoffner would put in a lay-up, but again, the Wasps would go for the trey. Shelor hit the 3-pointer off the assist from Turner.

Emory & Henry would ride the lead for the 91-78 victory.

Maryville (3-1) was led by Spicer and Shoffner, who both deposited 17 points for the Scots. Both had four rebounds, while Shoffnter had three assists and a steal.

Logan Brewer had 12 points, while shooting 5-of-6 from the floor, while Nokes had eight points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Hoppa had seven points and six boards, whil Bowyer had seven points to go with four assists.

Emier Bowman had five points, while Garcia scored three. Dante Richitelli had two points on the evening.

Emory & Henry saw Turner lead the way with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Gravley had 19 points to go with seven assists. Shelor had 16 points, while Branscomb tallied nine on a 3-of-3 night from behind the arc.

The Wasps shot 51.9 percent from the 3-point line, bucketing 14 on the afternoon. Nine of those 14 came in the second half, as Emory and Henry hit 8-of-8 through the final 13 minutes.

Maryville will return to Randy Lambert Court on Saturday, Nov. 28, as they host the Maryville College Classic. LaGrange College will play Oglethorpe University at 2 p.m., before the Scots will host No. 18 Emory University at 4 p.m.
