Maryville eliminated from USA South tournament

Piedmont College eliminated the Maryville College Scots from the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday evening, in a 2-0 match.

The Lions used two second-half goals to get past the Scots, as Megan Hatfield scored one goal and assisted on another for Piedmont.

The loss ends Maryville season, as the Scots post a 13-4-2 mark on the year.

In the first half, Maryville outshot Piedmont, 7-5, but both teams came away without a goal. At the half, the score was 0-0, while Piedmont tallied three shots on goal to the Scots' two.

Rachel Taylor had three saves to keep the Lions off the board, as Michaela Gardner tallied two for Piedmont.

Rachel Leal had two shots to lead Maryville, while five other Scots had a shot to bring Maryville's total to five. Piedmont saw Cassidy Reich with two shots – one of those on goal – during the first stanza.

Sarah Webber helped to get the Lions on the board first in the second half. Webber beat a Maryville defender, finding Megan Hatfield for her 10th goal of the season during the 49th minute. Just before the 50-minute mark, Piedmont led 1-0.

Piedmont would find their second goal in the 63rd minute, as Hatfield added an assist to go with her goal. Hatfield beat Maryville's defense, passing the ball across the box. She found the USA South Athletic Conference Player of the Year, who put it past Maryville's Taylor on the far side of the goal to give the Lions a 2-0 lead with only 25 minutes left to play.

Maryville outshot the Lions for the game, 17-11, while posting seven shots on goal. Taylor tallied five saves in 90 minutes in goal for Maryville.

Natasha Enrique led the Scots with five shots, while Leal had three. Allyson Hale, Kirsten Alcorn and Jordyn Lee each had two shots on the evening.

Reich had six of Piedmont's 11 shots, as she tallied a goal. Hatfield had only one shot, resulting in a goal, to go along with an assist.

Maryville is eliminated from the conference tournament, while Piedmont will advance to face Methodist in the championship match tomorrow.
