Shoffner, Bowyer lead Scots past Royals, 110-105

The Maryville College Scots picked up a hard-fought win over Johnson University on Wednesday night, 110-105, behind the heroics of Spencer Shoffner and Jaylen Bowyer.

Shoffner poured in 25 points to lead all scorers on the evening, while pulling in six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. The senior forward tallied 10-of-17 from the field, while going 5-of-9 from long range.

Bowyer also had a key night, talling a double-double effort with a career high 20 points and a career high 13 assist for the Scots. The sophomore also had five rebound, while shooting 13-of-16 from the charity stripe – most of those coming during later minutes of the second half.

Maryville held a slim 47-41 lead at the half, as they shot 43.9 percent from the field, and 8-of-16 from beyond the arc. Shoffner led the first half with 13 points, while Bowyer had eight assists.

Colt Nokes had nine points in the first stanza, while shooting 3-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

The Scots were hindered by 11 turnovers during the first half, allowing the Royals off 14 points off turnovers.

The second half, Maryville did most of their damage at the charity stripe, going 19-of-29. Bowyer dropped an extra 15 points in the second quarter, while Shoffner added 12.

Johnson deposited 61.1 percent (22-of-36) from the field, while going 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from beyond the arc to lead the comeback run during the final half.

Maryville (5-1) was led by Bowyer and Shoffner, while Nokes totaled a career high 13 points.

Logan Brewer had 12 points and four rebounds.

Emanuelle Garcia had 11 points to go with three steals, while Emier Bowman answered him with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks. The freshman forward also threw down a thunderous dunk off the assist from Bowyer.

Dante Hoppa led Maryville with 11 rebounds, while tallying nine points and four assists. Tyler Spicer had five points, while Blake Bowman added four.

For Johnson (2-8) it was Kenny White that led the way off the bench, scoring 22 points off 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Rickey Bowen scored 21, while Nick Marshall had 19. Jordan McClendon added 15, while Gunner St. John had 14 points and a team-leading nine rebounds.

Maryville will look next to take on USA South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College on Saturday, Dec. 5. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
