Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team claimed the 2015 Rhodes College basketball tournament with a 90-71 win over MacMurray College on Sunday evening in Memphis, Tennessee. The victory moves the Scots to 9-2 on the season.
The Scots exploded for a 51-point first half behind a 52% shooting effort from the floor. Maryville also found their range with a 5-for-12 success rate (42%) from long distance. The 22-point halftime advantage (51-29) was a direct result of MC's defensive effort, forcing nine turnovers, holding the Highlanders to a 37% shooting percentage before the intermission.
MacMurray cut the Scots' advantage in half during the first ten minutes of the final period with a 29-18 run. Maryville closed out the challenge with a 51% shooting effort while sinking 82% of their free throws to seal the win.
Maryville's depth allowed six Scots to finish with double–digit scoring, helping MC to post 90 or more points for the seventh time this season. Sophomore guard Jay Bowyer paced MC with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting while dishing out six assists. Senior Spencer Shoffner added 15 points, six assists, five steals, and four rebounds to help the Scots to a three game win streak. Tyler Spicer deposited three treys en route to a 13-point evening while bringing down a team-high eight rebounds. Logan Brewer and Emanuelle Garcia each deposited a dozen points while Colt Nokes added 11. Nokes, Spicer, and Dante Hoppa each brought down eight boards to help the Scots out rebound the Highlanders 40-33.
MacMurray (5-5) was paced by Brent Long and Deavis Johnson who tossed in 18 and 17 points respectively.
Maryville will take some time off for the holidays and then prepare for a tough USA South schedule beginning on January 3rd in Ferrum, Virginia.
