Ibarra, Hopkins shutdown Huntingdon offense to claim diamond victory 5-2

Box Score

The Maryville College baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with a 5-2 USA South road victory over Huntingdon College on Friday evening in Montgomery, Alabama.

The Scots' Jeremy Ibarra, a right-hander from Anaheim, California, shut down the heavy hitting Hawks with a three-hitter over six innings of work to earn his first collegiate victory wearing the orange and garnet. Junior right-hander Tyler Hopkins, a Maryville native, earned the save after allowing only one hit over the final three innings. Ibarra and Hopkins combined for eight strikeouts to help snap a Huntingdon four-game winning streak.

Maryville got on the scoreboard in the second inning when designated hitter Chris Ervin laced a double to right center field to score Zack Blonder.

The Scots went up 2-0 when Logan Jenkins scored an unearned run off a Huntingdon miscue.

In the sixth inning, Maryville took advantage of a pair of Hawk errors to score a trio of unearned runs.

Leading 5-0, Huntingdon rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Patrick Kucera and Alec Raley plated RBI groundouts.

The 5-2 lead was preserved by Hopkins' one-hit effort on the mound to close the door.

Maryville (2-4, 1-4 USA South) had an eight hit offensive attack with seven Scots recording hits. Second baseman John McDermott finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Huntingdon (4-1, 4-1 USA South) was led at the plate by second baseman Mason Throneberry's 2-for-3 effort.

MC and the Hawks will battle in the final game of the USA South series on Sunday. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. EST.
