Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team claimed their third consecutive USA South series with a double header sweep of LaGrange College on Saturday. In a series moved to LaGrange, Georgia due to the weather, the Scots defeated the Panthers 2-0 and 6-5 to take the first two games of the league series.
In the first challenge, a scoreless battle through five innings was broken up by the Scots in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Dean singled to drive in Sam Jokerst before Zack Blonder laced a double to score Dean.
The 2-0 lead was all MC pitching would need. Seth Debity (2-2) went eight innings on the mound and shut down the Panther bats by scattering five hits. Jerod Dickey earned his second save of the season to preserve the victory.
Maryville's offense was paced by Dean who finished 2-for-4 in game one.
The nightcap saw Maryville battle back late for a walk-off win.
LaGrange took a 2-0 lead on a Cain Sauls RBI single and sacrifice fly.
MC rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Sam Jokerst laced a double scoring Greg Vourloumis and John McDermott.
The following two innings the Panthers jumped out to a 5-2 advantage behind a homerun, RBI single, and sacrifice fly.
The bottom of the eighth saw MC rally for three runs when Dean stroked an RBI single before Chris Ervin connected on a two-RBI double in the left centerfield gap to score Dean and Logan Jenkins.
The stage was set for the bottom of the ninth when Sam Jokert blasted a game wining shot over the left field wall to secure the walk-off 6-5 win. Jokerst and McDermott led MC's 10-hit offensive attack.
Jeremy Ibarra tossed five inning scattering five hits for the quality start. Evan Heffner, Jerod Dickey, Bill Woodruff, Cody Akers, and Tyler Hopkins worked solid relief effort with Hopkins (1-0) earning the win with a shutout inning in the ninth.
The Scots are on a seven game winning streak and will face LaGrange in a series closing game on Sunday beginning at 1:00.
