Box Score After a season opening 11-hit offensive attack, Maryville College's bats were silenced by Piedmont College's Chris Goershel as the right-hander allowed only a pair of hits in an 11-0 shutout of the Scots on MC's Scotland Yard on Friday evening.
The Piedmont hurler struck out six in six innings of work while three relievers preserved the shutout allowing only one more MC hit.
Piedmont broke up a scoreless game in the third inning by stroking four hits and plating three runs off MC starter Seth Debity. Debity was touched for two more runs in the fifth inning before exiting. The junior right-hander scattered nine hits over five innings of work. Relievers Cody Akers and Zack May combined for the final four innings on the mound for the Scots allowing six combined earned runs.
John McDermott, Greg Vourloumis, and Sam Jokerst collected Maryville only three hits with McDermott and Vourloumis stroking doubles.
Piedmont (1-0) finished with 16 hits. Will Skidmore, Griffin Olson, and Breck Davidson each finished with three hits and a combined five RBIs.
The Scots will host the Lions for the second game of their three-game USA South on Saturday. First pitch on MC's Scotland Yard is slated for 3:00 p.m.
