Maryville College's Nick Dean deposited a grand slam to right centerfield to break a tie game in the ninth and give the Scots a 9-5 victory over Covenant College on Saturday afternoon in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
MC lit up the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Greg Vourloumis laced a single to center field scoring Chris Ervin and Zack Blonder.
Covenant touched Maryville starter Seth Debity for a run in the bottom of the second with a Luke Harvey RBI fielder's choice.
The Scots of Maryville tallied a trio of runs in the third when Nick Reynolds scored on a passed ball and Nick Dean drove in Logan Jenkins with an infield single. Dean would later cross the plate on a wild pitch.
Trailing 5-1, Covenant would close the gap with a pair of runs in the seventh on a Scott Gillespie RBI double and a Caleb Bloye RBI single.
Covenant tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Will Cleland. Cleland scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Maryville's final inning rally was sparked by Sam Lokerst's leadoff double. Nick Reynolds legged out a bunt single and Logan Jenkins walked to set up Dean's third homerun on the season.
MC's Debity posted another quality start on the mound going 6.1 innings while scattering eight hits. The right-hander allowed only a pair of earned runs before Evan Heffner (2-0) game in for 1.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Tyler Hopkins closed the door in the ninth with his sixth save on the season.
Covenant falls to 7-11 and 4-6 in USA South action.
Maryville (16-7, 12-7 USA South) had a 10-hit offensive attack supported by Nick Dean's 3-for-5, 5 RBI afternoon. Nick Reynolds finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
