Box Score The Maryville College baseball team hosted Covenant College for the final game of their USA South series on Monday evening. MC used the hot bat of Nick Dean and a strong pitching performance by Lawson Wishard to defeat Covenant 9-1.
Maryville scored first in the top of the second when Greg Vourloumis knocked in John McDermott with a double off the left field wall.
The Scots extended their lead to 2-0 in the third when Logan Jenkins tripled down the right field line and Nick Dean laced a single up the middle to record his 31st RBI of the season.
A two-out opposite field single in the fifth inning by Maryville's Zack Blonder made the score 4-0 when Logan Jenkins and Nick Dean rounded the bases to score on the first baseman's two-RBI deposit.
MC pushed across five unearned runs in the sixth inning when the Scots took advantage of a Covenant miscue and wild pitch. Maryville's lone hit in the inning was a three-run blast by Nick Dean, his 4th dinger of the season and 34th RBI.
Going into the bottom of the sixth Maryville possessed a 9-0 advantage with Lawson Wishard tossing a four-hit shutout.
Covenant broke up the shutout in the bottom of the inning when K.C. Simons doubles and stole third before coming home on a ground out.
Wishard (3-3) finished with the mound victory after seven complete innings. The lefty scattered six hits while striking out six. Joe Jones came on in relief to set down six consecutive hitters.
Maryville's nine hit offensive attack was paced by Nick Dean. The standout shortstop finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Leftfielder Logan Jenkins went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
MC will host Emory & Henry College on Tuesday for a non-conference south region challenge. The first pitch against the Wasps on Scotland Yard is slated for 3:00 p.m.
