Box Score Behind the bat of Nick Dean and the arms of Seth Debity and Tyler Hopkins, the Maryville College diamondmen earned a 7-5 victory over Averett University at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, North Carolina on Friday afternoon.
Debity tossed six complete innings while scattering six hit allowing only three earned runs. MC relievers Joe Jones and Tyler Hopkins completed the game allowing only three Cougar hits over the final three innings. Hopkins tallied his conference leading 8th save to close out the victory.
MC scored first with a Zack Blonder RBI double scoring Andrew Henry. Austin Watters sent Nick Dean home with an RBI groundout to make the score 2-0.
Averett battled back with three runs in the bottom of the inning scoring on an RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and an unearned run.
Trailing 3-2, the Scots' Nick Dean left Five County Stadium for his eighth homerun of the season. The two-run blast scored Logan Jenkins making the score 4-3.
Dean laced a two-RBI double in the seventh scoring Jenkins and Henry to give MC a 6-4 advantage.
Sam Jokerst touched home plate in the 8th inning following a failed pick-off to make the score 7-4.
Averrett attempted a late rally in their final at-bat but Hopkins allowed only an infield ground out RBI to make the final score 7-5.
Maryville's nine hit attack was paced by Dean. The senior shortstop finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a pair of stolen bases, a double, a homer, and four RBI. Andrew Henry finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double.
The Scots (24-13, 17-11 USA South) will conclude their North Carolina swing with a double header with Averett on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
